The M.E.N.T.O.R.S. Program

Multi-Ethnic Network for Training, Outreach, and Resources for Seniors
The M.E.N.T.O.R.S. Project was developed by APIOATF in 1994 to help senior service providers better outreach ethnic and low-income elders. It is funded through the Older Americans Ace (OAA) with administration by the Los Angeles County Area Agency on Aging.
The goal of the M.E.N.T.O.R.S. Project is to increase the participation of ethnic and low-income seniors in programs and services. M.E.N.T.O.R.S. trainings are tailored to meet each provider agency's specific needs, utilizing trainers and consultants from the Asian, African American, American Indian, Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, and Latino communities as experts.
M.E.N.T.O.R.S. also provides technical assistance, such as translating simple written matericals and identifying culturally-appropriate resources for agencies.
- M.E.N.T.O.R.S. identifies ethnic groups according to Federal classifications:
- African American
- American Indian
- Asian
- Native Hawaiian & Other Pacific Islanders
- Latino
M.E.N.T.O.R.S. responds to contracted service providers throughout the County - from the Santa Clarita valley to West Los Angeles, from Sn Gabriel Valley to the South Bay, and all points in between.The Project provides cultural diversity training and technical assistance to Los Angeles County Area Agency on Aging-contracted senior service providers at no cost.

M.E.N.T.O.R.S. Training Sessions have included such topics as:
- Understanding Diversity in Latino Elder Communities
- Serving African American Elders
- Elder Abuse in Ethnic Communities
- Health and Mental Health in Asian Elders
- Perceptions of Caregiving in Ethnic Communities
