Getting to Know the Los Angeles Office

Amy Phillips, Director

Amy Miyako Phillips became the Director of the Asian and Pacific Islander Older Adults Task Force (APIOATF) in July 2008. Prior to that, she worked in the Social Services Department of the Little Tokyo Service Center, a non-profit social service and community development agency in Los Angeles, where she primarily served older adults and their families. Amy is a graduate of Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, where she studied sociology and anthropology, and focused on cultural preservation in ethnic minority communities. She has experience providing direct services, including bilingual case management, and coordinating community events, such as caregiver conferences addressing culturally appropriate needs and resources.

In the process of advocating for clients, Amy gained first-hand knowledge about the needs of seniors and the various resources available to them, as well as the contours of the API and nonprofit communities in the Los Angeles area. Her interest in older adult issues extends into her volunteer activities, and she serves on the board of directors of Little Tokyo Towers, a HUD-subsidized affordable housing building for seniors. At the same time, Amy views her work as intergenerational, and believes that leadership development and training opportunities that inspire people to care about issues are vital to the overall health of a community. Over the last 8 years, Amy has helped develop and coordinate several youth cultural heritage education programs and applies these values to APIOATF's programs and overall direction.
